call for SSC nominations
PAGES activities are overseen by an international Scientific Steering Committee (SSC). The SSC represents a broad spectrum of disciplines and nationalities, and includes both junior and senior scientists. The continuing success of PAGES relies on the input of these people.
SSC tasks include such things as:
Overall responsibility for the PAGES project.
Developing and promoting PAGES scientific agendahosting PAGES workshops, acting as a liaison to PAGES workshop organizers, editing special newsletter or journal issues, representing PAGES at meetings, coordinating national PAGES activities.
Communicating with the PAGES IPO.
Scientists who serve on the SSC normally do so for a period of 3 years, with the potential for renewal for an additional term. Nominations to the SSC can be made by individuals or the SSC itself, and are considered by the Executive Committee (EXCOM) of the SSC at their biannual meetings. Selected candidates are then recommended to IGBP for final approval.
In seeking nominations, we are not only looking for scientific excellence and a high level of commitment to PAGES goals, but are also aiming to achieve a disciplinary, nationality, gender and age balance. Current round of nominations:
PAGES seeks nominations for 2 new members before 1 May 2010:
1) Scientist from Switzerland
A Memorandum of Agreement between PAGES funders, the Swiss and US National Science Foundations, states that PAGES must have both a Swiss and an American Co-Chair. Heinz Wanner, the current Swiss Co-Chair, will step down at the end of 2010. We are therefore looking for a new Swiss SSC member who is prepared to become Co-Chair. Candidates need to have a position at a Swiss research institution.
2) Scientist from the southern hemisphere
We invite nominations for one additional SSC member to increase representation of the southern hemisphere.
Nomination procedure:
To nominate a paleoscientist (no self-nominations), please send the following items by email to Thorsten Kiefer:
* a nomination letter (1 page, preferably a Word file)
* the nominee's cv (max. 6 pages, must be a Word file)
* 2 letters of support from scientists within PAGES research areas (each max. 1 page, preferably a Word file)
* a statement from the nominee on their goals and plans for PAGES as an SSC member (max. 1 page, must be a Word file)
