Researcher, coupled ice sheet–climate modeling - Bergen, Norway

A permanent researcher position is available in the field of ice sheet and climate modeling at NORCE Climate and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research in Bergen, Norway.

Description

NORCE Climate conducts basic and applied research on the past, present and future climate system (including ice sheets), on anthropogenic climate change and its impact on societies, and on the feasibility of climate change mitigation options.

NORCE Climate is one of the four partners of the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR), which is the largest climate research centre in the Scandinavian countries and among the leading centres in Europe.

The main task will be to further develop, improve and analyze the coupling of the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM) with an ice-sheet model (currently CISM). Scientifically, the initial focus is on the interactions between the atmosphere (surface mass balance, atmospheric circulation, clouds) and the Greenland ice sheet.

The researcher will be part of the large Norwegian infrastructure project INES which boosts the development of NorESM and be connected to KeyClim, a four-year scientific project focusing on key Earth system processes in the Arctic and high Northern latitudes. Furthermore, the researcher will be involved in RISES, a strategic core project at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research dealing with ice sheets and their interaction with atmospheric circulation and basal hydrology.

Coupled ice sheet and climate modeling is an exciting, relevant and challenging area of science, and they seek a highly motivated person to join the ice sheet - sea level team at NORCE Climate. Coupled ice sheet–climate modeling is a priority in NORCE Climate as well as in the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, and they are actively looking to strengthen and expand this activity in the coming years.

NORCE and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research provide an exciting work environment, connecting around 250 climate scientists in Bergen.

Tasks

- Advance the development of the Norwegian coupled climate – ice sheet model (NorESM-CISM)
- Set-up, perform and analyze coupled climate– ice sheet model simulations
- Focus on atmosphere–ice interactions over Greenland
- Publish in relevant peer reviewed journals
- The successful applicant will be expected to apply for (inter)national funding.

Requirements

- A PhD within physics, mathematics, meteorology, glaciology, oceanography or related field is required
- A strong background in Earth system modeling and model development is required.

Desired qualifications and skills

- Experience with ice sheet modeling is an advantage
- Experience in working with Linux/Unix environments and with high level programming languages (e.g. FORTRAN, Matlab, R, Python) is needed
- Skills in handling, analysing, and visualizing climate and ice sheet model results
- Ability to work across disciplines
- Good team working skills while being proactive
- Proficiency in both written and oral English.
