The Conference on Marine Environment: the Past, Present and Future was the result of a series of consultations with a number of international scientific organizations (JGOFS, LOICZ, PAGES and START) as well as individual scientists.

It was held to provide a forum that would result in lucid, candid descriptions of the status of the marine environment.
