A broad variety of landscapes from the Arctic in the north to the Subtropics in the south, from very continental to marine provides great opportunities for diverse paleoenvironmental studies in Russia. Traditional fields of Russian paleoenvironmental research are marine and terrestrial sediments, pollen, diatoms, plant macrofossils, permafrost, glacier variations and ice-cores, tree-rings and documentary records.
