PAGES Lithuania

Welcome to PAGES Lithuania

The territory of Lithuania could be assumed as classical example for the investigation of Quaternary environments. Numerous interglacial and interstadial sequences of regional significance have provided excellent data for the evaluation of Holsteinian and Eemian palaeoclime, vegetation and palaeoecology of the sedimentary basins. Simultaneously, being situated on the marginal edge of the Weichselian Glaciation this region plays the major role in the reconstruction of the Late Glacial and Holocene environmental features. Diversity of the environment, including presence of the Baltic Sea coast, provided a great potential for such survey. Pollen, diatom, plant macrofossil, chemical and isotope data are widely applied for the reconstruction and stratification of the palaeoenvironmental events including characterization and evaluation of human impact.
