Up to 3m high stalagmites in the Amaterska Velky Mocal peat bog (E. Brizova)
Cave in the Moravian Karst (I. Audy)
The territory of the Czech Republic lay in the central European periglacial zone in the Pleistocene, between the continental ice sheet in the north and Alpine montane glaciers in the south. The study of the Quaternary continental paleoenvironment in this region has a long tradition. In the last few years, classic disciplines such as paleontology, palynology and the study of loess and fossil soil complexes have been complemented by flourishing studies of Late Glacial and Holocene lake sediments and measurements of the paleotemperature record in boreholes. Considerable potential for the future lies in the study of cave stalagmites.
